Is Kwantlen Polytechnic University a good university to go to?

2 hour bus ride to university (SFU Burnaby)?

  • Ok, so there's a few days left til I have to register for courses at SFU. I live in Richmond, so bussing/skytraining it to burnaby takes about 2 hours. The only university nearby is Kwantlen Polytechnic University.. but it's more of a college/university combo than an actual university. It's about 20 - 30 min away by bus. Should i stay enrolled in SFU or transfer? Are there significant downfalls to attending kwantlen? I know I could transfer to SFU or UBC after 2 years or whatever but I've heard it's also hard to transfer credits/units. I myself, want to go to SFU but my parents and other relatives are warning me about the long commute and how it'll take a toll on my health. Advice from people who have attended SFU for a couple of years or so from Richmond, or similar distances, would be much appreciated! Or else people who have transferred from Kwantlen to UBC or SFU would also be very helpful!

  • Answer:

If Kwantlen offers classes in the field that you're interested in, then I see no reason not to attend, especially if you eventually plan on switching to another university. I work in a college registrar's office, and I can tell you that it's quite common to have transfer students whose credits apply towards a degree in the university they're transferring to... If you take some classes at Kwantlen for now until you're ready to move into residence or move closer to SFU or UBC, as long as you'd be studying in a related field, I'm sure you'll be able to transfer at least some of your credits. At the same time, a 2-hour commute isn't unheard of, and if there's a course you really want to take at SFU and isn't offered at Kwantlen, then you could go for it. You could use that commuting time to catch up on reading and studying that you'd have to do at some point anyway...

Transferring is always a real pain in the butt. If you live in Richmond, UBC is the better choice for commuting. At SFU eventually you may want to see if you can live on campus.
