what is transverse intersection of Whitney stratifications?

Who has the right-of-way at an intersection with a freeway off-ramp?

  • Think of a normal intersection. You are turning left, the driver across the intersection is turning right. You both have a standard, solid green light. The person turning right has the right-of-way (after the people going straight, of course), and THEN you can turn left. This is all basic, right? Now what about when you are getting off a freeway? You are exiting the freeway off-ramp, again turning left, and driver(s) across the intersection are turning right. You both have a solid green light. Who has the right-of-way between the two? Some believe the drivers getting off the freeway have the right-of-way, no matter who is going which way across the intersection. I believe that the same rules as a standard intersection apply (that is, the driver(s) turning right have the right-of-way, and THEN the driver(s) turning left). Others have no clue and both turn at the same friggin' time! So who has the true right-of-way? Where's a DMV official when you need one? (This is all for U.S. driving, by the way.)

  • Answer:

Sorry, but I do not follow your description of the traffic situation after the freeway off ramp? My recollection, and I do drive often on Interstates, is that off ramps end up on a traffic light, or stop sign or yield sign. None that I can recall end up with opposite traffic. If this is not what you mean, sorry, that is what I understand. It is a sad situation that our states' licensing program has not evolved for decades and just provides minimum training. What takes over is local custom and the monkey-see-monkey-do method of traffic rules. Have you asked an adult or a friend if they studied the training manual or review traffic laws of the state? Probably not. So, there is a lot of ignorance, lack of law enforcement, bully driving, or having an expectation that other drivers have some common conception of traffic movement. Just be careful when driving, using turn signals and be proactive in learning how to avoid serious situations. There are plenty of them around. Best of luck.

If there is a yield sign present, the party behind it lets others go first. Your local traffic engineers usually determine where that sign should go. In the absence of signage, the exiting ramp traffic should go first to prevent them from stacking up onto the high speed roadway. Safety first.
