How does the NJ Transit bus transfer system work?

• How does the transfer fee system work for NJ Transit buses? Say I wanted to get from Pitman, NJ to Lakewood NJ. This would require me to take one bus from Pitman, transfer buses at the Walter Rand Transportation Center in Camden, and take another bus to Lakewood. Do I need to say anything to the driver of the first bus about the transfer? Do I present my receipt to the driver of the second bus and tell him I need a transfer to get to Lakewood for a lesser fare?

  According to NJ Transit, “Transfers are available for use by one-way full-fare-paying riders whose complete trip must be made using two buses within New Jersey only. The transfer must be purchased at the time of boarding. Customers pay the regular fare to the transfer location, plus the transfer charge. The transfer will be accepted on the connecting bus for a one-zone ride. Riders going beyond one zone must pay an additional fare. Transfers are only valid for two hours after issued.” Sounds like you want to do one extra transfer. You can call them at (973) 275-5555 for help figuring out the transfer.
