I suggest going to a 3rd-party lender (like your bank or credit union) and making an application for an auto loan. This will give you an idea of your credit-worthiness without playing any games at the dealership. Upon approval, the bank will give you a "site draft", which is essentially a blank check, to take to the dealership. Use it like cash. The site draft will also give you an edge in your negotiation. Because you are pre-approved with another lender, you can concentrate on the price of the vehicle. One game that dealerships play is "low sale price, high interest rate (with in-house financing). It is important to agree on the price of the vehicle first and then try to obtain in-house financing at terms that are equal or better than your pre-approved site draft. Keep in mind that many auto makers are offering finaning incentives like 0.9% or 1.9% financing, which is better than the market rate. Still, go to the bank first and get pre-approved.
