What car is the cheapest to insure and good for a first car?

What would be a good starter/first car? Cheap to Run & Insure?

  • I try to avoid Vauxhall & Ford, So I'm looking to spend £800 on a used car, that is cheap to run, and most importantly cheap to insure. I'm 22.

    I don't know if you can get a Geo Metro where you're at, but I'd look into it if I were you. Just don't be expecting much more than good gas mileage.

I would recommend a Peugeot 306 turbo diesel...they are quick, good to drive, very economical, about 50mpg, which is a must with today's fuel prices! and cheap to insure. Don't listen to the rubbish that people go on about avoiding french cars, the 306 turbo diesel engine is very a reliable engine if maintained properly, and can do upwards of 200k. In any case just try and find a good car with plenty of service history and take it for a good test drive. : ) All the best : )

Nissan micra's are cheap runabouts, vauxhall corsas the same(i know you said no vauxhalls). the Honda jazz is pretty reasonable, or an old mini in good nick. basically anything with a 1.2ltr engine or under will be cheap to insure, tax and give you reasonably good fuel economy. Japanese cars are generally more reliable but the corsa's are pretty good. don't forget though, if you decided to "bling" it up it will make you're insurance more expensive, if you don't tell them and you have an accident or it gets nicked you are effectively not insured as you have made modifications to the vehicle you have not declared.

yeah micras will be a good bet, they are very reliable, the 1l/1.2 should be cheap to insure, for your budget i am sure you can get one with power steering. The engine is does not have a cambelt instead a chain so listen out because it may just need tightening. I am sure sure if you can strech your budget but look for a polo 1litre, they are much better, german build quaility, will go forever and a day, as long as they are maintained, i.e oil full etc.. Either one of them should be good.

Renault Clio diesel, £35.00 a YEAR road tax and 62 miles to the gallon, i would say you would need to pay about a grand but its worth paying the other £200.00, you would save loads. I think they are a group 1 or 2 on insurance.

For that kind of money, your best bet's probably a Clio or a Punto. Both good cars, good mpg, cheap insurance, good to drive. The Punto scores on style (for me) but the best advice is buy the best car you can find, rather than looking for a specific model.

Fiat Punto/Uno or something. They're lovely. Cheap on fuel & insurance, quite zippy, comfy, reliable. Look for a small engine size.
