How can I find car ownership history of a particular person?

• My dad back in the 60s owned a 69 Chevelle SS. He sold the car around that time, and really wished he still owned it (pretty much like anyone else who owned a great classic). He has been paying for my college, and to repay him I was going to try and find the same 69 Chevelle SS that he owned, restore it, and give it to him as a gift. Problem is, I do not know the VIN number of it, all he has told me that he has is a picture of the car. I basically need a way to find out the VIN of the 69 Chevelle that he owned.

  My dad kept outstanding records of his cars. I still have the VIN from his 1972 Olds 442. However, without the actual documents from the sale or purchase (which should ideally be kept forever), you don't really have a prayer. The DMV doesn't have those records anymore and you can't really trace VINs predating 1981. Restoration is expensive and time-consuming. If you happen to find any Chevelle SS from that year, it'll either be in terrible condition or fully restored with a big price tag. Hell, even a restored and/or original Olds 442 is going for $75,000 these days. To be perfectly honest, you'll probably never find the car he owned.
