Can I insure my car abroad and drive it in Canada?

What are the procedures for buying a US car and having it ok'd to drive in Canada?

  • I live in Canada and have to get a new car b/c of recent car collision. Looking at the prices of new 2008/09 models, I know it's typically $4,000-$5,000 cheaper to buy a car in the US compared to in Canada. What sort of paperwork would I need to do to be able to legally drive the car from the US in Canada? Or the cost incurred for this type of procedure. I have Canadian license plates from my previous car.

  • Answer:

Mickey is wrong- The Canadian regulations are the same as the US. Just make sure you have all the paper work for customs.

Canada's environmental guide lines are even tougher then ours in the USA. Ran across it with a Candian customer and it would cost too much to get it converted to pass the limits in Canada. Check it out, will probably be cheaper to buy it in Canada...sorry!
