How do I find out how much sales tax I paid on my old car?

  • Well it's tax time and I was talking to my tax guy and he said that I can claim the sales tax I paid on my new car and I asked him if I could pay the sales tax I paid on the car I bought just a few months prior and traded in for my current car and he said sure just as long as you know the purchase price and the amount of the sales tax. Only issue with that is I threw away my registration paperwork for the 2009 when I bought my 2011. Is there anyway I can find out how much sales tax I paid on my 2009? I know the purchase price was $15,999 but I don't know if that helps any. The dealership I originally bought it from said they added the sales tax into the purchase price...so would they know? I need it like by today so I don't have time to hassle back and forth with the DMV and find out they can't give it to me since I don't own it anymore or whatever. I bought a 2009 eclipse in August, traded it in in October for my 2011 eclipse which I currently have if it got confusing.

    You cannot deduct sales tax on a vehicle you bought in 2011.

just call the dealer and ask what their current sales tax rate is and what it was a few months ago. Chances are its the same. So if it was 3.5% or 7% or whatever, then just do the math.
