Here we register vehicles at the county clerk's office. Some places you have to register it at the DMV or county courthouse. There is a place on the back of the title near the top where you enter how much you paid for the vehicle. Call your local registration office and ask them to calculate how much tax would be based on the purchase price. Tell them you need to know so you know how much money to bring with you when you go to register your car. They should be able to tell you how much it's going to be. That's what I did when I bought my car a few weeks ago from a private party. If you buy from a dealership, they usually figure in the tax/title transfer into the total cost.
