Car Dilemma: Affordable vs. Performance?
-
I'm looking to buy a first car to keep for the next 5 years or so, and here's my dilema: I'm a big car guy who would love a fast, sporty, affordable car. I was looking seriously at either the Civic Si or VW GTI. Optioned the way I want, the Si would be 25k, and the GTI would be 30k. Then I was thinking, a Yaris would be 15k optioned the way I want. Obviously the Yaris is definately not a fast performance car, however it is way cheaper. Should I go for the Yaris and save up my money and hopefully get a fast car later on down the road, or is the extra 10-15k worth it for the performance now?

Answer:
Get a used car. There are plenty of cars you could get for 15 grand that are quick and which will end up costing you less than that 25-30k new car. Unless you need a back seat and cargo room, I say get a Miata. They're fun, reasonably quick stock, and they're VERY upgradeable (the powertrain is over-built, made from parts of larger, more powerful cars, and can handle a LOT of upgrading without losing reliability)

Try looking at other cars for example Chevrolet Cobalt SS Supercharged....the new cobalt ss is going to be turbocharged for 2008 and that one is rated at 260whp/260tq it wont come out until mid 2008 though. They start of at about 20k and up fully optioned should get you in the high 20k's. The 2007 supercharged cobalt is still a good option too which is currently available.

Get a used car (3 - 5 years old) and save a lot of money. That way you can get what you want.

do a trade off. what I mean is get a 1 or 2 year old civic si or gti. remember this on any new car as soon as the car is registered to you it will take the biggest depreciation hit it will ever take. I see over and over again people getting new cars, regreting their decisions months to a year later and being stuck with it, because the value took a huge hit and they owe too much verses the current value. honda and volkswagen have certified preowned programs which are factory audited if you are concerned with buying a preowned vehicle. You would save thousands a still get the performance you are looking for. Another option is to go with a lease on a new car for 2-3 years that way the payment would lower and wouldn't have to worry about trading in the vehicle later on. Works great if you dont mind a payment and enjoy getting a new car every few years, if not go with the first option. If you settle for a yaris (which has very little power) but you are a performance minded person, you will regret your decision and will be stuck because of what I said about new car depreciation senerios

If you want performance why are you even considering a Honda or a VW. Forget a new car . For the money you want to spend you can afford a real used performance car. Not some ricer wannabe.

well for performance i would go with a camaro z28 or a mustang gt,but obviously you like imports...i would recomend you get a mitsubishi eclipse or a hyundai tiburon.

Yes. The Yaris has turned into a big seller for Toyota. It has plenty of interior room (Is almost as big as last gen. Corolla.) and resale is high so nothing to lose but save money from great MPG and very low maintenance at a cheap price.
