Selling is not telling you have 2 ears and one mouth for a reason. You should listen twice as much as you talk. In order to sell something you need to know what to sell, and you come to this conclusion by asking questions. Once you have asked enough questions then you should know needs vs wants, and be able to make a very specific presentation to what the customer needs. Otherwise you could be telling them about features and benefits that do not really matter to them. If all sales boils down to is a handshake then everyone would be doing it. Do not listen to Harry, Henry or whatever his name is. That is the worst advice I have ever heard.

By not allowing the closers or sales managers to go in the deals as they tend to kill the relationships that has been established by the sales person. As a sales person the best tool that you have is to take advantage of that initial handshake and to look at your customer in the eyes when you tell them your name. To me that is the best display of sincerity from a sales person. The next thing you have to do is to know you product. Product knowledge is also very essential because is going to continue to give you that credibility with the customer and it will make for an easier transition once you are ready to ask for their business. In a nutshell firm grip on the handshake while looking at the customer in the eyes, and learn your product every day and you will become top sales person in no time.

Hi, this is my opinion. I do not buy from "smooth talking salesmen first of all" I buy from people who act like they care when I get sidetracked and talk about my kids, dont interrupt when I am explaining what I want and need. I never go with the top model of anything and hate when people try to talk me into it- that is when I walk out. To put sincerity into your sales pitch offer them a middle of the road, cheap and top of the line but not the most expensive model. Do comparisons so they can see what they are getting with spending more money they will usually go with the most expensive that they can afford after a comparison like say a fridge say the cheapo is like a cavalier not too many options and not going to last forever, middle of the line like a hyundai sonata loaded great deal all the options but not the price tag , and then the lg stainless steel model is like a bmw to beat all expensive but holy cow you use every inch of space with all the storage options and that warrenty wow best to be had( without dropping 7 grand on it anyway. you basically want them to think you are the same kind of person they are. People buy from people like them so if you buy the sonata like fridge they want to also. avoid personal opinions I hate sales people who wait to see my stance on an idea then agree- they should not be asking personal q's period. talk to their kids. I leave if they ignore my kids or look disapproving at all- shows they arent like me if they dont like kids or are annoyed easily. Keep individual fruit snack and cookie and cracker packs for all ages, bottled water, cans of soda(name brand both pepsi and coke) sets you apart from competition. makes you look high end. Dress classic not trendy no hoop earrings, nose rings short shirts, etc you get the point. keep cheap little toys think quarter machine in pizza hut to give kids to entertain em while you close the deal. hope I helped some basically just be average not smooth or perfect let your hair down little makeup NO purfume or cologne, good luck and talk slow people shut down if you talk fast. So many have this idea that talking fast will cause them to close the deal without seeing negatives but in reality they will just walk out if they cannot follow what you are saying.

Ask for the business. Most salesman make great presentations, but in the end, it is surprising how many will not actually ask the prospect to buy now.

The purpose of business is really not to make money. The purpose of business is the acquisition and maintenance of customers. If you take care of your customers they will take care of you. It may seem hard to believe, but brutal honesty has never failed me. I'm starting my own business now but I was #1 salesman last year for my pest control branch almost every month during the summer/fall. If a customer only needed one lousy mouse trap, I gave them one mouse trap and didn't charge for it. I didnt' try to sign them up for service. Sometimes they would hire me just for their spiders. Building on that reputation, I started receiving referrals. That is to say, the customers I was honest to started telling their friends about me. Once that happened, those with serious problems already had their checkbooks in hand ready to sign a one-year service agreement. Honesty is #1. Top salesmen/saleswomen don't start as #1. By building a reputation and calling your customer's you've already sold or stopping by to check on them you'll have the phone ringing off the hook with people who WANT to give you their money!

Don't ASK for their business as someone else said. There's nothing more annoying than the sales schlep who say's "Now what would it take to sell you this car today?" You should assume everyone you talk with is a buyer and write them up! They need to be led!
