What should I watch out for when buying a car on craigslist?
-
I was just wondering what should I watch out for when buying a car off of craigslist because one owner I've talked to said he doesn't have time to fix the car but it's an easy fix. Also, he is buying a house and needs money. He has 2 cars for sale 1 is a 1987 trans am for 1200 but he was doing an engine swap and doesn't have the time to rewire it but he left the transmission hooked up. And he also has a camaro for sale it runs perfect but just needs new plugs for 1800? It doesn't make sense to me. But I want to know what should I watch out for if a car is stolen, or if it's a money pit? Also how should I ask them when I ask them to compare titles and their liscense?

Answer:
If you are not too experience with automotive repairs then don't take on someone else leftover project. Because you don't know what they did and most likely some jerry rigged/shortcut they thought it's a good idea to do. Don't believe in anything a seller is saying. Needs plugs, why didn't you put new plugs in it? Title wise if the title is not a copy and looks real(water spot) and it matches the guy's license name then it should be fine. If you feel something wrong then write down the VIN and say you have to think about it and check the VIN with the DMV. Make sure all registration fees are paid up to date. I don't think there is any lien on it, but can check with that.

be careful most of them are spams unless you look at it yourself. If there is no picture on the post most likely its a scam

I told you this before...those cars are parts cars because they're not running.. If the trans am was in perfect running shape it might be worth $1200..but as it sits..$200 same with the Camaro

Ask to see their license. If they refuse dont buy from them. Only purchase from the person listed as the owner on the title of the vehicle. If you are not being sold the car by that person and they dont show you a license to verify it is them do not buy the vehicle! Also test drive the car and ask if there are any problems with it. Also bring it to a local mechanic BEFORE buying it.

Sounds like both of those cars are basket case money pits to me. #1 thing to understand. Everyone is a liar. Don't trust anything anyone tells you. Verify everything. If that Camaro only needed new plugs why wouldn't the guy put $48 worth of plugs in the car and sell it as a perfectly good running car. he'd get $1000 more for it if he did. Why? Because he's a liar. Always check the title. Run a Carfax.

if it's an easy fix then the owner would have already fixed it. New plugs cost under $30 and are easy to install. I wouldn't bother with either of those cars unless you have a lot of cash to put into them
whata waste
