    as far as the comment to you not to buy at auction unless your a mechanic is rediculous. Every auction has what is called a post sale inspection where the vehicles are checked before the final purchase. as to your question, you need to check with your dmv. to purchase at a dealer auction you will need to be licensed as at least a "b" dealer but in order to be approved for a dealers licenses you have to obtain zoning permits on where the cars will be kept. the process can be a huge headache.

Let me guess, Tom. You want a license so that you can bu a used car from an auto auction. DON"T DO IT!!! Unless you are a mechanic or know a mechanic who can do work for you at reduced prices, an auto auction is the last place you need to be. Those cars are at an auction for a reason. Save your money, do your reasearch, and take your time finding a nice used car at a retail price. You'll be glad you did.

If you just want to buy one or two cars, go to a small used car dealer. Ask to go to the auction with their buyer, and offer them $100 plus actual paperwork costs (title stamps, filings, etc.) for the car(s) that you buy. If the first dealer you ask says no, keep trying. I know people who do this all the time. As for the license, you need to find out which department of the state gov. regulates car dealers, and contact them. The dealer you use for the above purchase may be willing to help you. BTW, there are auctions open to the public. Look around for one.
