What should I bring on an 8-hour car drive?

CAN I 'LEGALLY' BRING AND DRIVE A CAR FROM UK TO USA (NO DUMB ANSWERS ,FOR THE BORED PEOPLE)?

  • bored, smartasses, etc, need not reply) im looking for someone who knows or has brought a UK car to the USA to drive 'legally' on the streets. any 'real' answers will be helpfull, thanks. ( no need for smartass useless comments people, try and be mature, ok?)

  • Answer:

i knew someone who did this from germany. they just put the car in a shipping container and shipped it. there was no problem, they just registered the car as usual. if it's a new car you will need to pay custom/duty taxes/fees. contact US customs to be sure. and may need to consider that a car from the UK has the steering wheel on the right side...may be a problem, but you can have a new dash and wheel installed. perhaps expensive and cost prohibitive. ***** Hey, 'just bored': just to let you know that this was indeed fact. perhaps there were other issues that needed to be sorted-out (which my friend didn't tell me about), but the car was made road worthy and is used legally in the US today.

you could but you have to set it to the USA federal /state emissions. its the same thing as buying a skyline or a jaguar from its origin. you can own one, but you have to reset the emissions, and costs a ton of money. right hand drive cars are street legal, the speed units are different. if you are in a 35 mile per hour zone, you should be going 60 kilometers per hour. they do those 0-60 tests for a reason, its to see how fast the car can accelerate from a dead stop to highway speed, 60 mph is equal to 100 km/h. for every 10 kilometers per hour the speedometer reads, its 6 miles per hour here in the USA. if you go on the freeway at 70 mph, the speedometer will read 110 km/h. an american speedometer will have km/h as the smaller numbers that you see. if you have a 120 mph speedometer, kilometers per hour will be 180 or 200 depending on the car.

DOT safety and emission standards will have to be met for use in the US, but yes it can be done, and there are permits issued in certain circumstances for temporary use, as in up to a year, bla bla bla, lots of hoops to jump through, in most cases its not worth the money spent to import a car from another country, taxes, tariffs, duty's and modifications to meet DOT standards usually dissuade most people from doing so. the only people that do it are collectors and in most cases only vintage and classics. and just a heads up those that say there friend did it are blowing hot smoke up your butt.

as long as the vehicle is equipped with all the safety requirements and smog equipment required buy the USA then you should have no problems. There are cars still in customs rotting that the owner was unable to get through the US requirements. So decide if your car has all that is required or plan on not taking it.
