How does buying a car in the USA work for a UK citizen wanting to travel across country?
-
I would like to buy a car in May on the East Coast of the USA and drive it to the West Coast of the USA. When I go to the car dealer, or buy a car privately. What papers / insurance / tax etc will I need to buy to legitimately drive it - and allow my friends to drive it - across the USA. At the end of the trip, I would like to sell the car back to a dealership - I don't really mind if it is even for half the original price. or to a cite like webuyanycar.com, and obviously cancel any insurance I might have. Bare in mind, I have a car and insurance in the UK. Can anyone enlighten me please? N.B Car rental will chalk up to about $4000 before fuel. So consider that the budget for the car / insurance etc.

Answer:
You won't need to prove you have insurance when you purchase the car. As far as what paper's you'll need I really can't think of anything. I'm fairly certain that if you have the money they will get you a car. I would suggest your best bet would be to find a dealer on the internet and call them. That will save you some hassle. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a car for $4000 that would be better than a rental car and a $4000 car might be difficult to sell. In some states you pay the tax on the car when you guys it, in others you pay when you register the car. I think you'll get more piece of mind if you were to just rent a car. I would suggest something comfortable for the very long straight roads through the center of the country something with XM radio, though they stopped carrying BBC radio :( Most states require you to have some form of insurance and it's probably a good idea to get some for your trip if nothing than to protect yourself. There are several nationwide companies again google is your friend also calling the companies will give you a better idea of how it's really going to work. When I lived in the UK I was able to keep American insurance and it might be possible that your insurance company would cover you in the US as well.

Look for ppl who want drivers to drive their car cross US. Yellow pages under Transport I think. Or call shipping companies. If you'r buying & selling cars, you'l save $1000s dealing w/ private parties, not commercial dealers.
