Can a 17-year-old become a car salesman for a summer job?

  • I am 17 and I'm looking for a summer job. I have always wanted to become a car salesman. I know a lot about cars (not as much as I should, but I can always learn). I want to learn how to deal with people and negotiate. I'm a very smart kid (projected valedictorian) and I'm good at talking to people and lying (let's face it, you need to be a good liar to be a good car salesman) So can a 17-year-old with no prior work experience (besides volunteering at a hospital main desk) become a car salesman? If so, what's the best place to look?

    Probably not. Due to your age most dealers insurance and garage liability wont cover you. You might be able to get a job at a smaller dirt lot and if its a Mom and Pop type outfit they may let you try and sell some. Thats probably your best chance. But DO NOT LIE ! ! ! If you dont know the answer never make one up. Go find out the right one and the customer will appreciate that and it will earn trust which is what its all about. If you always tell the truth you never have to remember what you told someone. If you end up selling cars for a living...Make that your #1 rule and you will do well.

You wouldn't get hired at a dealership without prior expierence or at least sales experience sorry and actually you don't need to be good at lying sales is not about lying which goes to show you wouldn't get hired no offence if your really serious you could become a detailer at a dealership which would get your foot in the door. Or try a used dealership is your best luck but a main stream dealership most likely won't hire you as a sales men.

Highly unlikely. Most dealers wont hire salesman younger than 25 with a good driving record for insurance reasons. A 17 year old salesman would jack up their insurance BIG TIME if they could even get you insured. Lots of other jobs you might have a reasonable chance at. Car salesman ain't one.

As far as i know, you have to be 18 to be a car salesman.
