What is the current NYC sales tax?

Out of State Car Sales Tax (For NYC). Help!?

  • I lived in Vermont for about a year, and during that time I bought myself a used car from a dealership. When I bought this car I paid Vermont Sales Tax but still had my old valid NYC drivers license. Since then I have moved back to NY and have been told by the DMV that in order to register my car I will need to pay NY sales tax. Even though I paid a sales tax upon purchasing the car. I am currently waiting for an actual copy of the bill of sale which will show the actual tax I paid (as it was unreadable in the faxed copy I provided). Will I have to pay the difference between state sales taxes? Or have to pay the full amount they quoted me (estimated off of the car value now)? Help! I'm new to this and need a bit of clarification.

  • Answer:

I'm no expert on NYC rules...but once you pay the sales tax on a vehicle, no matter where, you should not have to pay anything again, as long as it's titled in your name! Also, I bought a car, registered in Florida with PA driver's license, no problem. Eventually got FL. driver's license.
