If I bought a car one week ago, do I need to pay taxes before I sell it?

  • Title says it all. Do I need to pay taxes before I can sell the car or can I assign the title a second time? Bought a car thinking I had a good deal and got screwed over. Found out it needs about 1200 dollars in repairs and decided to cut my losses.

    Yes. The only way you can legally sell it is by registering the title in your name. And the only way to register the title in your name is to pay taxes @ the DMV.

Only dealers can reassign the title ,for you to sell it legally you have to title it in your name . If you already put your name on it yes new title ,if not you can sell it if someone will buy it but you are breaking the law

Yahoo is universal but vehicles purchases and taxes are not. Where I live, you pay the tax on a private vehicle sale when you register the vehicle. If you don't register the vehicle and decide to just scrap the car, tow the car to a junk yard. However, because the vehicle will not be registered to you, you may have a problem getting the salvage yard to take possession of the car from you (as you are not the registered owner).
