Do you get a better price if you buy a car on a weekday or evening?
-
I am planning on buying a van. But I was wondering if the sales person is more likely to give me a lower price if it was close to their closing hours. Or if it were in the weekday rather than the weekend. Does it matter?

Answer:
There's times of year when sale prices are better. But as for time of day, that's a bit of a myth that sales people perpetuate to make you feel like you're getting a great deal when negotiating. It's a way of "flattering" you and pumping up your ego. They'll say something like, "well, since it's the end of the day and we need to make one more deal to make our numbers we'll give it to you for this price." The implication is that they are giving you the best price possible just to make one more deal. Sometimes this is true. Salespeople and dealerships do have quotas to meet and at times they will "sacrifice" a car to make a deal. But this can happen at any time, if you're a good negotiator and stuck to your guns on the price, etc. For information on negotiating you can come to my site and read about it: http://www.1-800badcredit.com I used to sell cars in Phoenix and under my car buying pages I've got a couple articles about negotiating tactics. Bottom line - Get pre-approved for a loan and don't let them try to talk you into "financing through them." They make money on the financing and it's a good way to manipulate the payments to what you want them at without lowing the price of the vehicle. DON'T talk about payments, talk about PRICE. The salesperson and manager will constantly try to focus you in on payments, which can be manipulated through stretching payments or changing interest rates. Talk about the PRICE of the vehicle first, once you're agreed on that then talk about payments. Good luck to you!

try the end of the month when they are short on their goals

Weekends are better than weekdays. Last day of the month is better than first day. Fall is better than Spring (when next year's models arrive). Holidays are better than non holidays.

Honestly, it doesnt matter if its the weekend, weekday, morning, afternoon or evening. They are always going to have a reason for you to buy a car right now. Here are some examples that we (car salesman) use- Its the first day of the month and you come in to look at a car, here is the reason to buy today- "We need to get the month of to a great start! We are making deals on everything!" Its the last day of the month- "We need to sell 4 more to meet our goal! We are making deals on everything!" You come in on a Monday in the middle of the month- "We are having a sale to help us from a slow weekend. We will make the best deal for you today." Get my point. There is always a reason for you to buy RIGHT NOW. The more time you have to think about it, the more you can talk yourself into walking away or looking somewhere else. If you want the most attention from a salesman- I suggest going in on a weekday morning. You will have plenty of time to do your negotiating, test drives, and looking without pressure. If by chance you dont make a deal that day, it gives them a chance to review the deal, see what they missed, or what it will take to get you back in to buy the car. If there is a way to earn your business, they WILL call you SOON. Good luck!

Nope first thing in the morning.

I'm not sure about that, but I do know that if you buy at the end of the month you are more likely to get a better financing rate.
