Whats the best car to get for $3000-$6000?

• I have $3,000 cash. I really need a car. If need be, I might borrow some money from the bank to get a car that I cannot afford to pay for presently as I can make the payments. I don't know if I will be able to get a loan or not as I have no credit. Anyhow, I would love to get a VW diesel... for that price range I'm looking at a 97-03. If the car was well maintained, it should be a great car and they get 45-50MPG. If I could get one with a veggie conversion kit, that'd be great. The problem is that I don't know whether I'm going to have to put a ton of money into it for repairs and such. A friend of ours practically worships his VWs... but they are in the shop almost constantly. That worries me. Any thoughts?? If I don't get a diesel, I'd want to get a car that gets good mileage. Maybe a toyota. But if it'd work out... I'd love to get a VW diesel. Any thoughts??

  I have a friend who swears by anything with a diesel. He had a bug and loved it... never any problems other then we used to question his sexuality for driving it. I think if you would spend some extra money and have the engine checked out by a mechanic.. Watch them do a compression test. Other then that I would take it for a test drive on the highway, make sure no shimmies or shakes or brake pulls. Also check the color of tranny fluid if automatic. If it doesnt appear abused it might be a good car.. Always a risk unless you know the owner.. I myself would prefer a GTI instead.. Lastly if you can keep a nest egg for repairs.. Japanese cars arent bad either, but finding one that wasnt boy racer abused might be expensive. Some where else on yahoo i read... If you cant pay it off in three months(including car). You cant afford it.. Just words to stay out of debt. its tough to do do because us Americans love to live beyond our means. thats the American way.. ..
