What is the best AWD car to get for a new teen driver?

  • I live up in the mountains, and need to get my soon to be 16 year old a car. IT has to be AWD, and our budget is about $10,000. Things like cost of insurance/safety should be factored in too.

    I just bought a Subaru WRX, and I love it. Yes insurance will be more, but if you live in the mountains (high altitude) the base model (non-turbo) may not have enough horsepower to get you safely over some of the hills there. As much as I hate to say this (being a car guy) If you don't have to deal with big big hills, Suzuki makes an AWD car that is cheap (crap I was just at the car show and I can't remember the name). Well, if you don't have hills just get the Impreza, or for that matter any later model Subie. They have excellent service records rivaling Honda and Toyota. To the guy below- I would avoid the SVX or anything that old, as I'm not too comfortable spending that much $$ on something that probably has alot of miles on it. I bought my '02 WRX for $13,500, it has 55k miles, so I'm thinking a later (02 and up)base model Impreza with less than 50k miles could easlily be found in that price range, maybe a liitle more than 10k, but not too much more, especially if you have some time to search. The more time you have the better deal you will find. >>C

subaru impreza. or a forester if you can get it. a little more room. Our family got a Subaru Legacy 1998 for $7,500. not bad. definately doable for $10k.

An Impreza/WRX would be great, but for $10,000? I doubt it. I would suggest maybe lower tier Subarus like the SVX or Alcyone, both AWD. Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 is another good choice too. And if it's sold in your area, maybe an old Nissan Pulsar GTI-R.

Get a used Subaru Impreza. Great car and fun to drive. Insurance shouldnt be that bad as long as it is not the Impreza WRX, those have a little higher insurance.
