I need Serious Help for my drawing portfolio!!!!! (for art school scad)?
-
i am trying to put together a porfolio for SCAD in atlanta. this is an art school and i dont have much artwork but the stuff i do have is really good especially for the fact that i have only taken one drawing class. well it would have been better if my mom hadnt gotten involved.. my stuff is not completely done... a lot of the stuff is not exactly FINISHED! but to make a long story short i was not able to finish it because my mom took my artwork so i could use an expensive camera to take a picture of my half finished drawings, instead of using an okay camera to take pictures of completely finished drawings. thats really neither here nor there sorry i didnt even really need to say that. the point is that the pictures of the drawings still look really bad because I was really just trying to snap the photos and get away from my moms boyfriend. so these photos are high quality but they are crooked and unaligned and it looks a lot like someone just took a picture of a drawing instead of a perfectly framed picture with cropped sides and it looks really amateurish i was wondering if the picture quality would take points away from my portfolio? or what about the fact that my work was not done yet. I am planning on writing in my artist statements that these works have not been finished and i still have a couple things i would like to do with them and name the stuff i was going to do. I also am thinking that maybe i should just leave the pictures crooked and skewed and just write "i wanted to keep the wall in the photos of my drawings just to bascically show that it is a drawing and it would help you understand the size of the picture and that it is not a ppicture but a drawing" or just crop it as close as possible and hope that they understand that i am taking a picture of a drawing and that it wont be a perfect print. what do you think? what do the judgers really focus on when i am submitting do they look at my photomanship and take it into account or do they just ignore it and focus on my artwork... i mean, afterall i am not going to that school for photography i am going for video game animation

Answer:
Yes, picture quality can affect the results if it is too low. Having unfinished works will not help. If you have sketches for example that is one thing, but incomplete work is another. Honestly it sounds like what you have to show you would be most likely told to practice some more, get more work together and apply again. They want to see that it is something you do every day, you eat sleep, breath art. You have to be able to show them this. Good luck though.

It's all about presentation. Make it look nice. The best thing would be to have your pieces finished and nice, straight on photos taken of them. If it's a portfolio, obviously it's important. The judges can't judge what you 'plan to do' with your stuff. They only have what you give them. If the pieces are finished, the photos should be as nice as possible.
