What makes a good director?

  • I mean, I understand what they do, but I'm just curious as to how they do their job makes a film good. A good story and actors/actresses are important, but could a bad director ruin the film when everything else is good? I think they just order people around, which I know is their JOB but how does a director do this so that the film is a huge success? I hear people saying something like this once in awhile, "Ah, that film should be good, so and so directed it!". "Hm...another epic failure from so and so, he should just give up!". Seriously, it's one of those things I've never questioned, you know...about how important directors are but have never really understood what makes them so darn special...

  • Answer:

a director's MAIN job is to work with the actors. However, it is THEIR vision and their final say how a lot of things are done like the lighting, costume, editing, shots, etc. When they suck.. that pretty much means the story was stupid, but a good director can make a stupid story really awesome from the way it is visually portrayed. Bad vision in all breaks a director and the way he/she goes about telling the story. mitch
