What does kitsch mean in art?

  • Apparently vladimir tretchikoff paintings are consider kitsch? My art teacher said it is,but I don't have a clue what kitsch actaully means!? Thank you! http://www.allposters.com/-sp/Chinese-Girl-Posters_i385884_.htm < A painting from Tretchikoff.

  • Answer:

This is certainly different from any definition of "kitsch" that I know. Kitsch is meant to show a *lack* of craft, but with a design that will appeal to the public overall. Andy Warhol certainly had a strong kitsch element, as did Roy Lichtenstein. I don't see that in this work.
