What are the three main movements in contemporary art?

Curious About Art & Art Movements/Art History Can You Help?

  • I'm an art lover but I don't really know much about art or it's history. I know it's not necessary to know about art to enjoy it but it's a subject I'm passionate about and would like to be able to discuss it with others. Before going as far going to study art or art history I would like to read up on it. Can you suggest any reading material for me? I'm particular interested in turn of the 20th century up to the 50s but anything would be welcome. 10 points for the best answer.

  • Answer:

I know you think that you don't have to know anything about art to enjoy it, but I beg to differ with you. One cannot truly understand the complexities of a movement or the creative depth of an artist, unless you can really comprehend the time between the first mark on a cave wall and the nano seconds it took to transfer an image into a modern day digital masterpiece. Start with the basics. Pick a time period or movement(Realism which led to Impressionism which led to Expressionism). My favorites are Monet, Pissaro, Picasso and all the way up to De Kooning and Klein.

Try reading Erich Gombrich's "The Story of Art". It's quite readable and informative without getting to dry and academic.
