Creative writing, how to write about women?

  • Hi, In school creative writing is my favorite thing to do. One thing i've noticed is that i dont feel comfortable writing about female characters and only write about male characters, especially when it comes to dialogues. Whenever theres a female character in a story shes always in obscurity or isn't very 3 dimensional. The reason for this is because first of all I'm male and I don't understand the mindset of a girl. In fact I'm very shy around girls. Because of this I dont feel comfortable writing about female characters because im afraid i might misrepresent something. Any other writers, have this issue? How should i overcome it. p.s. I always go for as much realism as possible in my work

    I write about both and I found one of the best ways to get into the head of a gender is to spend time with them, especially if they are simliar to the kind of character i want to write. If you don't feel comfortable asking real girls if you can spend some time with them, then try watching some reality TV (where the female characters are usually quite direct to explain what they think or how they feel) to get some ideas. It also helps to read some blogs by females in general, and look on youtube for vlog (video blog) entries from various females you think you might be interested in using as a character basis. It just takes alot of looking around but you'll get there. There's plenty of resources out there, use them to your advantage :)

Try to put yourself in the "shoes" of a woman. Don't be so negative about doing so, and try to think like a woman or the woman character that you're writing about. Think of a sister, mom, aunt, close friend who is female. Think about the one you know the best... then try to use their logic and ways of thinking IF they were that character. Be stereotypical when you're doing this too if it helps, gotta start on some kind of base.
