Walden quote meaning?

Does anybody know the meaning behind this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson?

  • They just built a new student center on my college campus, and on the wall, there is a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson. The quote says, "There is a crack in everything God has made." I don't understand this quote or why they chose it to put on the wall. Does anybody know what this quote means?

  • Answer:

I think they chose to put that on the wall to remind you guys to not go about life in a perfectly straight line, but to go about being free because one day you won't be able to do the things you want to do. Do it now! Live life at its fullest, ad if that means getting a crack, so be it!

I'm fairly sure that this quote means that nothing is perfect, even things that people assume are perfect can be found full of faults. It's a quote telling you to check your perspective and see things from other people's eyes.

It means don't be too hard on yourself and forgive others of their shortcomings. The reason they probably chose this was because it is a fairly universal human tendency to have a difficult time with self esteem and forgiving.
