How to become a freelance writer?

Aside from the details of running a small business, how do I acheive "freelance writer" status, earning enough income to support myself? How do I go about this? Who would my clients be?

Answer:
Don't discount Craigslist. I have two solid freelance positions through companies I found there. It's going to be easier to find a company and write something specifically for them than writing something you like and shopping it around. If you want to write for magazines or newspapers, try emailing the editor and asking what sort of stories they're looking for.
