Name of instrumental band where 3 girls playing flute, violin and drum?

Is it too late to start marching band and trombone in 11th grade?

  • Hey, I am in 10th grade now, doing bass for Jazz band and violin for orchestra (Except I won't be playing bass for next semester, since I'll have a full schedule and somebody signed up for bass, next term). I am half-contemplating on perhaps trying Marching band next year, for my Junior year and on. At the moment I don't play any instrument that is applicable to Marching band, but if I were to take one up I would want to play trombone, or MAYBE flute. Leaning towards trombone, though. I would consider myself a fast-learner, since I learned how to play guitar quite well within a year, and multiple instruments within that time-frame, such as violin just a few months ago and I think I'm already caught up with the rest of the second violins =) What I'm wanting to ask is, though, is this: Regardless of the possibility, would it be considered as "too late" to try marching band in my Junior year of high school? Also, would trombone be the best option as an instrument to start playing (for marching band, and occasional Jazz band I suppose)? If so, how should I obtain a trombone, and are there any decent student/beginner ones for about the 100 dollar range? (Name brands/models, if applicable, please) Some people shake these notions off and say that I already have too much on my plate; but this is for next year, and I really want to challenge myself, work hard, and expand my musical expertise to other instruments.

  • Answer:

It's not too late! You might be a little behind as far as playing goes, but take lessons this year and try your best to get caught up! I say, play trombone. You'd probably regret switching to flute. And if you're leaning towards trombone right now, then yeah. Play trombone! Maybe I'm a little bit biased, since I am a trombone player X) I don't know if you can find any for under $100, but yamaha trombones are good student instruments. They also allow you to get better high range, which is good if you are playing second or first part. If you are planning on playing 3rd or 4th part, get an instrument with a trigger. Maybe a Blessing or a Bach. Many high schools also let students rent instruments for free for the year, but that all depends on your school and what they have available. I say, learn a new instrument and join the band! It's always great to expand! You have a good attitude, good luck :)
