Where can I get a writing sample?

Can anyone tell me how my writing is?

  • As usual I like to start with a little background... I'll try to keep it short. I'm a 20 year old college student who, because of my many failures and indecisiveness, is going into his third year as a college freshman. I have always loved writing, though I never thought I was any good. One flaw I could never escape to this day is the fact that I am a TERRIBLE reader. I read painfully slow and if I try to pick up my pace I can read pages and pages and not be able to absorb any of it and can become lost and confused very easily... many have told me they believe I have a learning disability, such as ADD or ADHD. Despite this, my many literary inspirations finally pushed me over the edge. Even though I'm not an english major, I decided I wanted to write on a regular basis for multiple reasons. One reason was because I enjoyed it. The other reason was to help improve my grammar and spelling, as well as find my style and voice (which is undoubtably destroyed and diluted by subconscious efforts to sound like my heros (Hunter S. Thompson, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, ect.) One thing I've made into an undeniable conviction is the fact that when I write, it must be handwritten or, preferably, on a typewriter. I can't use a computer for writing. Starring into a bright screen and having so many distractions just doesn't do it for me. I also find the "tacking" of my 1953 Smith-Corona silent manual very soothing and relaxing. This has caused obvious hardships as far as having to copy everything I write down back onto the computer (that I despise so) incase anything were to happen to my hard copies. So now that I've bored you all to death with my thrilling life story, I'd like to give you a small sample of my writing to gauge. I understand that is a widely accepted fact that the writing of "youths" is typically regarded as unavoidably bad, due to lack of experience and such. But any who... I call this small, narrative piece "Blessed are The Deadbeats". Walking down Huntington Ave on a saturday night in Boston. The brisk wind tussles leafless park treetops, gently illuminated by pale, yellow Christmas lights. The tip of the Prudential Center skyscraper is glowing a brilliant purple. Yes, the city is alive tonight. Every guy in town is out and about in their plain black suits, their girls wrapped around their arms. Then there's me. Nowhere to be and no money to get up and go with. It was the kind of lonesome disposition I never wanted, but desperately needed. It was as if my solemn responsibility was to be the overseer of the town. For you see, "the city is alive" isn't just an expression, it's god's honest truth. The city itself contains so much life that you could almost imagine it unearthing itself from the ground and walking around like a human being! Someone had to be there to appreciate such immense possibility. Just the job for a broke, deadbeat like myself. Walking the streets late at night and just taking in the world around me is unlike anything else I've ever experienced. It's like being in a gorgeous art gallery, but you're the only one there, and you've got all the time in the world to admire any painting that catches your eye, tilting your head, pondering the masterpieces. I truly believe that if you can take solace in a simple enough pleasure, you'll never live to see a dull moment. There aren't enough hours in Father Time's wallet to fully appreciate nights like these.
