What is the definition of art?

• I read a book once on art and what it is , the book was in my school library so I really just scanned the book. However, I did manage to finish the first chapter which was all about the evolution of art. In Roman times Science was considered art ; so a real question is what is art if what is considered art now ; might not be in a hundred years time. I had a big debate with a friend about art and what is and is not art. His more cynical than me and sees people who call themselves artist are only doing so as a way of pushing up there prices of their painting. Its all about status and people who buy paintings for thousands of dollars are only doing it to impress their friends. He also says musicians and film makers are a part of an industry and are only really interested in making money. I thought he may have a point after I thought about it but I always saw art as an expression of thought and not money oriented. I really like films and would like to see myself working in that field in the future and I would like to believe that even if I never made a penny I would still do films. So if art is forever evolving and there is art is as much as a Business as a supermarket. What is art?

  The definition of art, is decided by the person watching, everyone has different taste, and that is why it evolves with popular culture. Although it is also decided by the artist, he/she can choose what to convey, and if they try hard enough get a specific outcome which defines how the person will feel and therefore they can control the definition. Art is letting someone inside your head, to show them instead of to tell them, to make the audience feel a certain emotion.
