How can I become an art model?

How do i become a nude model for art students?

  • I've been thinking about the possibility of becoming a nude model for an art class. I have heard that it is an excellent confidence builder. But yet I search all across the web, and I could not find anything relating to such. any google search for "nude modeling" or "life drawing" does not return anything but fruit pictures and porn sites. If anyone is willing to help me find out more about this (preferably in a passive, website/brochure way at first) It would be greatly appreciated.

The best way to get started in this is to contact a local college art department or artists group. Colleges and universities usually have someone in the office that coordinates the models for classes. You'll have to go in to a college and fill out an application and then talk to the instructors who you'll be posing for. As part of the interview you may be asked to take your shirt off or get completely undressed depending on the instructor so they can see your body type. Artists groups are a little less strict. Usually they are in more need of models especially male models so they'll probably put you on their schedule and ask you to show up. Individual artists also tend to seek out models too, which is how I got started during the summer between my 10th and 11th grade year in school. I posed for a college instructor who was doing a commissioned sculpture. Some things that are common across the board. You will always want to be on time and dependable. By on time, I mean they'll want you there 15 - 20 minutes before the session begins which will give you time to get undressed and ready to go. Make sure you verify the time with them. You might also want to get a look at the room where you'll be posing so you can get a feel for the place. If you have an opportunity you might want to see if you can do some practice poses, just make sure you put a sign on the door before taking your clothes off so you're not interrupted. Depending on the instructor as well or group leader, you will want to take a towel with you or a pair of shorts to cover up with between the undressing area and the platform. I have had instructors who asked me to walk out nude and to remain that way through the session but that's not common. You can also take a pair of sandals or flip flops to wear if you want until you get to the platform but you'll have to go barefoot once you're on. I just go barefoot all the time - that makes less stuff for me to have to take. I've done this ever since I was 16 years old and can tell you the first tiime is a little nerve wracking especially in front of a class of 20 students or so, which I did the following fall after my sculpture, but once you get used to it, it's a great confidence builder and a great way to make money too. Don't worry about your body not being perfect, or being leered at. The artists are very serious about their work and they will be very thankful and appreciative that you're willing to show up and work for them. You can e-mail me if you have any questions I can help you with. Give it a try. Best of luck.

You probably wont find this information online as nude models usually don't pose with laptops. Go to the nearest college or university, they're usually happy to accept anyone as a nude model. I knew someone who did this and he pretty much just did it for tips... the job didn't pay very well at California College of the Arts... maybe it's different other places...

Call your local art schools and universities with arts departments. They are always looking for models. When I lived in NY, schools like NYU and the New School always used to have flyers up in the student areas looking for life models.

Talk to an art school about it. If you live near Philadelphia you can go to Philadelphia Center of The Arts, or maybe talk to an employee at the Philadelphia Art Museum about any information.

How about looking up local art schools or classes and contacting those places. Inquire as to whether they are looking for models. Don't forget local colleges and universities that have art programs.
