  Well I have a deviantArt myself and use to wonder the same thing. But the main thing is too just explore the site. One way is to favorite some deviations. Like look at the main page and look at the newly submitted category of deviations. Whichever ones you like, you favorite. Once you do, a bunch of people tend to go to people's profile to thank them themselves. They might even see your deviations and view them too! Another way is to join dA clubs. That is a great big factor and it makes dA a lot of fun. A lot of voting and stuff, plus when you get a deviation accepted in a highly public club or even a small club, you gain publicity for the deviation. People see it more. Lastly, make some friends. I have friends on dA and sometimes, they pass my name down to others like I pass theirs. dA has a lot of users and a lot of them are pretty cool people. As long as you don't give personal info, you're good.
