Is this a good introductory paragraph for Medea?

  • here is the assignment, On Medea: Write an essay that explains why audiences since the fifth century B.C. have been fascinated by the character of Medea. Being with the premise that Medea's actions and motivations are worth discussing and understanding despite her terrible her crimes. Your thesis statement at the end of your first paragraph should make an interesting claim about the character of Medea. here is my introductory paragraph: In every great play that has lasted there is always some universal appeal. When examining the back story of Medea, she was a shy woman who fell head over heels in love. Unfortunately from that point to the end of the play she has been pushed over the edge. She scarified everything for Jason and he abandoned her. Thus She became a psycho killer. However despite how terrible her actions and motivations were Medea is still worth discussing and understanding. The reasons why audiences since the fifth century B.C. have been fascinated by the character of Medea is because of her passion and rage towards Jason, her revenge and greatness and pride. the last sentence of my first paragraph is my thesis statement.

  • Answer:

I would use staying power instead of lasted as it sounds a bit 'off'. No need for When and the sentance then needs soemthing like - we understand that she is a shy woman. Scarified is not a good word - dont start a sentence with thus, you just need a comma and - making her into . No need for however as you are diluting your message it is stronger if you start with Despite - You need to tell us why we should discuss her - I suggest because there are parallels in our society today people we cannot cure and are powerless against. I would say greatness of pride as too many 'ands'

First, Medea tricked her sisters into killing their father, and cut up their brother so she & Jason & co could escape. You might need to read the myth if this isn't included in the play. Other than that, sounds good.

eeeeek!!!

Haha, same Lit class here. Good luck on the test
