How to separate line art from the white in GIMP?

What should I do about computer art?

  • HOW do people draw via computer? I can't make a good line when I try, it's all scribbly looking. I can only draw well on paper with a pencil. I want to design some invites and logos etc. to make some money here, But Idk how I can with only paper and pencils. I know how to scan, But the art programs I have no experience with and I can't figure them out. Gimp has a million little things on it, I just get lost trying to color in a circle. I don't know what to do, the fad is computer drawings now but I can't do that. I'm old fashioned when it comes to art >.< What do you think would be good for someone in my position? (someone who isn't an uber geek (not insulting) with these art programs)

  • Answer:

Photoshop and Gimp are known to be hard to use for the beginner. It will take time and patience to learn those programs. Adobe Photoshop and Gimp were specifically designed for photo editing and image manipulation of real photographs but people have come to use them as a drawing and painting program also. There will probably be limited drawing and painting capabilities using these two programs. Use a program that is geared towards drawing and painting on the computer. To guarantee a virus-free program, always download the software from the manufacturer's OFFICIAL website only! Since you are doing invites and logos, you will probably like the software DrawPlus by Serif. Buy the full program or download the free version DrawPlus Starter Edition http://www.serif.com/drawplus/ Also, MyPaint and ArtRage are very EASY programs to use! 100% FREE SOFTWARE 1. Artweaver by Boris Eyrich Software. (Artweaver Free) http://www.artweaver.de/ 2. Krita by Krita http://krita.org/ 3. MyPaint by InTiLinux http://mypaint.intilinux.com/ 4. PostworkShop by Xycod (PostworkShop Demo) http://www.postworkshop.net/ 5. SmoothDraw http://www.smoothdraw.com/ FREE TRIAL/PAID FOR SOFTWARE 1. Adobe Photoshop by Adobe Systems Inc. 2. ArtRage by Ambient Design Ltd 3. Artweaver by Boris Eyrich Software. (Artweaver Plus) 4. Autodesk Sketchbook Pro by Autodesk Inc 5. Corel Painter 12 by Corel Corporation 6. Corel Painter Essentials by Corel Corporation 7. DrawPlus by Serif 8. Flame Painter by Escape Motions (Peter Blaskovic) 9. OpenCanvas by PGN Corp. (PortalGraphics.Net) 10. Paint Tool Sai by Systemax Inc. 11. Project Dogwaffle by Daz 3D 12. TwistedBrush by Pixarra Inc. If you do not like using a mouse nor touchpad when drawing or painting on the computer, then buy a graphics tablet (also called a pen tablet or drawing tablet). A graphics tablet makes it easier to draw and paint on the computer and it is good for detailed work. Wacom is a popluar brand that gets good reviews. Check out Wacom official website because it gives detailed information and the system requirements needed for each tablet! You can buy these tablets at Wacom official website or Amazon website. Read the REVIEWS at Amazon website. Wacom Bamboo is for home use, office use, hobbyists, amateur artists and the price range is $79 to $199 (Bamboo Connect, Bamboo Capture, Bamboo Create http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8CfxqIj4iQ ). Wacom Intuos is for working professionals and serious artists. Wacom Intuos comes in sizes small, medium, large, extra large and the price range is $229 to $789

try having a lesson in photoshop I am old and an artist and draw a lot and I went to a day long tutorial where the guy had a laptop and just showed us everything ps could do & it stayed with me when I came to play with it myself - you can use a tablet rather than a mouse which feels more like a pencil & steady; once you have had a lesson or two you can start on very small things selecting and changing colours etc. or try out the filters - once you have the basics its just staying your comfort zone and playing a bit - The major thing is that you can try out small changes and get inspired I will often print out what I do from photoshop and add to it by hand and then rescan - It takes a long time to learn but it doesnt take long to get up and running and the best way to learn is to be inspired and want something particular = there are on you tube some very good online tutorials.
