What is organizational management and leadership?

What do you see as the difference between leadership and management?

  • An old question I know, but one that deserves more thought in these times. What do yo think?

    A good leader will find the best person in his team to get the job done. A good manager will find himself a few good leaders. to get the job done.

A Leader is someone who takes care of his/her people and isn't afraid to try new ways of doing things. Basically they take chances but not the type that will get people hurt. A Manager will take care of his/her people by doing what is right with guidelines that are already established and will not try to improve them or challenge them if he or she does not agree with them.

Leadership requires emotion and true moral and ethical consideration. Management is far less personal. It is the basic autonomic function of organizing things. Similar to "managing" a culture of bacteria vs leadership over a group of children!

A leader is one with a vision and an idea of how to proceed to accomplish his vision. A manager works within the framework of the leader's vision and ideas to get there, and does the detail work

Just from a philosophical standpoint. Hope I remember this right...read carefully... * He who knows not; and knows not, that he knows not, is a fool. Shun him. * He who knows not; and knows that he knows not is ignorant. Teach him. * He who knows; and knows not, that he knows, is asleep. Wake him. * He who knows; and knows that he knows, is a leader. Follow him. Managers can fall into any of the above categories. IMHO! Think it over.

One major difference is that management is always a formal structure within an organization, whereas leadership is an "emergent" property of the emotional processes and can arise from anywhere.
