What is currently being studied in science?

How many of you REALLY have studied science?

  • Now you will immediately think I am taking a swipe at creationists, but frankly speaking I have seen some atheist here post things that reveal a shocking lack of scientific knowledge. I am not suggesting everyone needs to go get a degree in physics, chemistry, or biology. But I am wondering how many of you REALLY keep up with science? Since our entire society is supported by science and technology, would it not be prudent to know something about it? So lets quantify this: 1. Do you regularly read a popular science magazine for the layman? Scientific American if you have some basic science education, Discover for the complete layman, are two examples? 2. Do you read at least one popular science book each year? Gribbon? Kaku? Sagan? Leakey? Just one a year? 3. Do you watch some sort of scientific program on say The Learning Channel or the Discovery Channel at least once per week? Just curious. Particularly since science gets brought up on this board so frequently, what do you do (regardless of your religion or lack thereof) to actually study science?

  • Answer:

You are a geek..I dont think anyone reads books anymore? just sayin..lol

Creationists don't study science. Just creation websites. They learn " Creation Science".

I watch science shows on TV, though sometimes they get their information wrong. I read science news on the internet, and there's a forum where a lot of scientists hang out where I sometimes go to ask questions. I don't read science books every year, but I have read a few, including Uncle Tungsten and some of the medical books my Oliver Sacks.

I watch the discovery channel all the time. I read my science books in school.

I have studied the physical sciences, mathematics, information technology and so on - and I have a degree in it as well. Well, two, technically, but I'm only counting the most recent one. 1: I follow technical websites rather than reading any particular magazine with any regularity. 2: No. I don't read much in the way of popular science books. I read relevant articles for my field of expertise. 3: Not with any regularity, but I'm an avid follower of the rather mindless drivel that's presented as 'popular science' on both NatGeo and Discovery. And an answer to your bonus question: I work. My job is relevant to my field of study, so keeping abreast of my field of expertise is actually a necessity rather than a luxury.

1. Do you regularly read a popular science magazine for the layman? - Why would I? I have access to professional journals that I have to read every day for my job. 2. Do you read at least one popular science book each year? No. I review basic concepts from Young and Freedman (University Physics), Cengel & Boles (Thermodynamics), and Bird, Steward and Lightfoot (Transport Phenomena) among others. (I kept all my college textbooks) 3. Do you watch some sort of scientific program on say The Learning Channel or the Discovery Channel at least once per week? Mythbusters is pretty good. Also good is Fight Science and How It's Made. what do you do (regardless of your religion or lack thereof) to actually study science? I am graced enough to have a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineerning and Math) related job.
