The role of agriculture in national development?

[Human Geography] What role does agriculture play in (economic/social/political etc.) development?

  • [Human Geography] What role does agriculture play in (economic/social/political etc.) development?

  • Answer:

Agriculture makes economic/social and political development possible. Hunter/gatherers can only function in groups that are relatively small. They will tend to be tribal at best. They cannot sustain large groups in one place long enough to create much that lasts...granted some exceptions, but until crops start to pay off with more to eat steadier over time... Agriculture means you need stability around land ownership, public works projects (water redistribution becomes a need...) and creates an excess of product that can be traded to others for other things. You can support religion and government since not everyone has to hunt/gather for themselves and their family every minute of every day. With out agriculture we go back to prehistoric styles, what few of us remain.
