• The civil rights movement was led by a group of black Christian ministers, who chose another minister as their spokesman. The women of the black Baptist churches were in many ways the backbone of this movement.The movement's meetings were usually heldin local black churches. Dr.King himself frequentley used biblical language and allusions in his speeches on civil rights: "If we are wrong, God Almighty is wrong. And we are determined here in Montgomery to walk and fight until justice runsdown like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream." What was the effect of that kind of religious sentiment on the movement's followers? On white people who were undecided about the movement and it's aims?

  The religious sentiment and terminology gave the black people hope. It encouraged them to persist in their non-violent efforts to gain civil rights. If they had not relied on the peaceful means and with the perceived backing of God, they likely would have turned to violence. The turn to violence would have brought a great deal of bloodshed, death, and very likely failure to achieve civil rights. The religious sentiment was that they had the support of God ; and, with God, eventual victory was inevitable. The non-violent , persistent, and spiritual-backed methods were much more difficult for civil rights opponents to deal with and destroy. Those people undecided about civil rights were brought to support the civil rights movement to varying extents. The violent acts by those strongly opposing civil rights served to polarize more borderline whites to support the civil rights movement. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a great orator with regard to choice of language and having the capacity to strongly affect and encourage his followers.
