The minimum ages to work?

Isn't it unfair that ages 16-17 can only work for 4 hours a day (in NJ)?

  • I'm turning 18 in a few months. I want to make a bit of cash for the future, especially since i have nothing better to do right now. My resume is exceptional, except that i have no work experience. And why is that? because no one wants to hire and train a person who can only work for 4 hours. i think that this is complete bullsh*t. i already had to wait till i was 16 so i could simply get a job, and now i'm being restricted. I'm 17, i think i could work for a full shift. It really pmo. And volunteering is the same. Everyone wants older, more experienced people. If you want a position you get put on a waiting list, which they never really get back to you on. And why would i want to volunteer to a place that doesn't need me? so what am i supposed to do all summer. to have fun you need money and transportation. to have a car you need money. to have money you need a job. this state is so stupid and i can't wait to move out. if you read all of this thanks. i needed someone to rant to. if you come up with a solution, thanks even more.

  • Answer:

When you are 18, register to vote. Then write the district congress person and representative about this restrictive law, or mow lawns for cash.

I understand your predicament. But, did you know that the reason for these child labor laws is solely to protect young people from being exploited by parents and employers? So your parents cannot force you to work more than 4 hours a day, so that you are free to get an education. Many countries do not have these laws to protect and educate their children. At one time, America didn't have these protective laws either. Kids were slave labor. You see, as long as you live with your parents they are entitled to your entire paycheck and to claim you and the money you earn on their income taxes. Some parents in America force their kids to work to the full extent of the law, and take their paycheck as household income..
