Jobs in the social services field.

I am not sure exactly what social work or field means?

  • So I am about to finish with my bachelor's in criminal justice...and I am not sure what kind of jobs I can apply for. I know it is a social science, but is it a social work degree? Is it a human service field? Here are two jobs I am interested in and their educational requirement's...does my criminal justice degree apply here or is it not considered a degree in social work or the human services field? Child Welfare Specialist Requires Bachelor’s degree in psychology, sociology, anthropology, social welfare or equivalent educational attainment in related field. <----What is that? Child Protection Specialist Requires a bachelor's degree in social work; or requires a bachelor's degree in a related human service field and four years of directly related professional experience. Also, I would like to be a juvenile drug counselor but not sure if criminal justice is the right degree?? OMG JUST HELP...IM CONFUSED! Thanks

    Criminal justice means you work for the fairness of people with criminal records..jails, lawfirms, courts. Social workers can also work in these places as the carreers overlap...for example families with incarcerated people leave children behind. This is where a social worker can help find social treatment for the well bieng of the child. They are different degrees but they work together and you may end up doing social work in a criminal justice field because social worker work anywhere there is a social need...hospitals, schools, adoption agencies, colleges believe it or not. I did my undergrad internship at a jail and I graduated with a social work and psychology degree but other interns there majored in criminal justice. When applying for jobs the trick is to word your resume in a way that sounds like you can DO the job. Yes juviinile counselor for at risk teens jobs can be done with your degree. Congratulations!!!

Social work is a whole other degree. You could probably get a job as a juvenile drug counselor, but there may be additional classes you will have to take. Try calling around and see what all you would need for the job you want.

Social work is a degree (BSW or MSW), so your Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice is not a "social work" degree. It may be considered a human service field degree based on the employer. When you see jobs that indicate or other human service related degree....a lot of that is based on interpretation of the employer. It is a broad term and some people may or may not consider criminal justice a human service related degree. There is no list, so to speak! If you are interested in those two jobs, it does not hurt anything to apply. As you know, we are not the employer doing the hiring and don't know what they are looking for. All you can do is apply and see what happens! Good luck! As far as being a drug counselor, you would need to check your state requirements because some states require certification to be a drug and alcohol abuse counselor.
