I'm damn well not sure about the essence, but I can tell you what separates (although not necessarily distances) us: Different sex chromosomes. EDIT: No, I'm not a very spiritual person to say the least. The concept of a differing "essence" based upon sex doesn't make much scientific sense. Sorry. I suppose the sexes are complimentary, but that's about it.
