What is the male equivalent of "First Lady"?

  • Seeing that Hilary Clinton and other women have a chance of becoming President or Prime Minister, what would that make their husbands (if any)? I truly hope that it's not "first man" or "first husband"; as a linguist, I am something of a language purist. To me, a lady is the counterpart of a lord or a gentleman, not another word for a woman. As "lord" and "lady" originally meant "the master/mistress of a household", what would the male equivalent of"First Lady" be?

    "First Gentleman" - The Queen of England has a husband you know. He is not known as the KING either! Bubba' (Bill) Clinton would be known as the "first gentleman" as married female US governors do this already.

first lady is equivalent to first gentleman. Mr. Arroyo is called as such and besides lady is always associated with gentleman...right? like "Ladies and gentlemen..."

I don't see the need for a title of any kind. He'd be "Mr. Lastname." Or the President's husband. Who cares? So what? These things aren't written in stone. Nor would I expect him to behave as a "first lady" either.

Hahaha. It would be pretty awesome if he was called the "First Lord," I have to admit. It would probably be something like "First Gentleman" though.

I know it should be First Gentleman, but Consort to The President sounds neat.

Actually, I think that the title of "First Lady" is outdated. The president's spouse should simply be referred to "Mr./Ms. _______________".
