What is a good independent news site?

Those who use the Internet as a resource for news, what is your favorite news site?

  • What site best represents your views? What do you think your choice says about you? (For example: do you have a favorite site for news on women's issues? Men's issues? Religious issues?) My favorite site is the venerable Slashdot: News for Nerds, Stuff that Matters http://slashdot.org/ it's one of the oldest such sites on the 'Net and has spawned it's own sub-culture http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slashdot covering science, technology, civil liberties, privacy, censorship, corporate abuses, and science-fiction. The political views vary, but the attitude is strongly anti-authoritarian, suspicious of government and corporate power grabs, and pro-civil liberties, as well as skeptical and usually secular. What does it say about me? I am a nerd!

  • Answer:

I usually just read the news on the yahoo sites UK, USA ,Aussie and Singapore, you can usually get a pretty good idea about whats going on in the world. I was begining to suspect you were a bit of a nerd with those Dr Who references from time to time. edit: David Tennant is the man though.

I really like this web site http://www.topix.com/news/activism I don’t really bother reading much on the internet though because a lot of it is just bull! Also you are a nerd?? Go here there is some really awesome stuff here http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/rc/8698/ Check out the SRV-1 Mobile Surveillance Robot how awesome is that?? Oh man. EDIT: Sci Fi, comics, computers haha you sound just like me. Ever read a comic called Ranxerox?? It's really interesting. It's a science fiction graphic novel by two Italian guys (I forget their names). The artwork was inspired by Frank Zappa aswell! Really worth a read if you haven't. :)

My main (non technical) news resources are: www.guardian.co.uk www.bbc.co.uk www.abc.net.au (australian broadcaster) news.google.com news.google.co.uk news.google.com.au (amazing to see the differences in selected stories) www.monbiot.com (columnist and academic who focuses on environment) www.indymedia.com (usually to find details of protests) www.getup.org.au (citizen journalism affiliated with sbs channel) www.ninemsn.com.au time was www.ananova.com (the associated press website) www.reuters.com For political news I tend to visit government websites to read acts and laws, the Hansard for transcripts of open parliamentary debate, and the UN website for amendments acts and resolutions. A lot easier than listening to hours of spin, and you can get straight to the centre of the politics. Actually saves time because you only need to read an act once, where you will be afflicted with different soundbites for months on end and still be none the wiser. what it says about me - i spend too much time online. Aside from that left leaning pro environmentalist.
