What's the difference between rules and norms?

Rules are made by the government or an autonomous body while norms are set by the society. By violating rules you get punished/admonished, while violating norms you get disrespected, hated or at least advised.

A RULE IS A WRITTEN CODIFIED PRACTICE, WHEREAS A NORM IS UNWRITTEN CODIFIED CONDUCT.

A Rule is mostly found in a formal organisation. There are written rules & regulations. A Norm is found in a casual & informal social envt. If a norm is not followed by a person, he is critisied. Norm are mostly Moral laws.

In the sociological sense, a norm is a rule. Norms are rules of behavior that are socially enforced through the use of sanctions. There are formal and informal norms. Formal norms are explicity stated rules enforced by formal insitutions (ex. laws enforced by Criminal Justice system). Informal norms are unofficial rules of behavior that are enforced and mutually agreed upon by a social group (ex. people are against drug use, so they shun a user who belongs to their group).

Rules are arbitrary. . .made by parents, teachers, government officials or others in authority. Norms are just that. . .a kind of average. The expression, "Goes against the norm" means that someone or something is not typical. For example, when you take the SAT, there is a score variance that statistically is the "norm" for the US population. Those who score higher or lower than the norm either are honor students or those who won't qualify for most universities.

Rules, are regulations or laws dictated by ruling/authoritative parties, while norms are dictated by culture or society. (Norms may be determined by your church, your heritage, your social group.)

Rules are enforced (by some higher authority). Norms are followed (by people as a discipline).
