How can I gain some control over my life again?
-
I'm overweight, I don't have many friends, I'm constantly procrastinating, My room's a mess and I'm failing school. I realised I needed to change when I had a mental break-down in English yesterday. I've already drawn up a study timetable, what else should I do?

Answer:
Draw up a life table. Write down what you like about yourself and then what you do not like. Put them in order of the most important in your life. Now write a list on how you can change the bad points so that in one year you can add them to the like list. Make separate lists you can post on a bulletin board in your room so you see it every day. Mark a star by what you accomplish. Example: Lose weight (15 lbs) break into 5 pounds per month to take off. Mark them off as you go. Only weigh once a week. Eat better. Stop all fast food except salads, stop soda drink Ice tea or water, and eat more veggies and fruit. Make two new friends. Work on it. You have to get incolved to make friends you have to get out of the house too. Get on a bowling league for teens, join a club like 4-H or Chess. Get involved in community service, helping others, you will be popular in no time. In order to change bad habits you must see them on paper. Stare at them each day and make a commitment to change. Just stick with it and put your mind to it. Your life will slowly change. Keep these commandments in mind: wisdom, patience, hope, forgiveness (even to yourself), courage, tolerance, compassion, love, and understanding. Make these your MOTO. Good Luck

1) Set some goals for yourself. Goals are the things that make you strive to do better. Set long term and short term goals. Give yourself a time table and rewards if you accomplish them. Maybe if you get good grades, you can buy something cool. 2) Get on a diet plan. You will feel better when you eat better and excercise. Even if it is just cutting out certain foods and then taking a walk everyday. Working out is also a good way to clear your head of those nasty stress thoughts that make weight problems worse. Try taking a long walk in the woods everyday as a chance to be alone and clear your head. 3) Don't let yourself worry about little things like your room. Unwanted worries turn into big problems. Focus on things that you can change that are big. The little things fall into place when the big things are done. 4) The semester is half over. Set up a study time table that will work for next semester too. Remember that happiness comes from within. If you find happiness in yourself and what you do, then you'll find true happiness with others. Always be your own biggest fan and cheer yourself on. Rewards work for little kids, why not use that on yourself. If you really want something, make yourself work to earn it so that you will always be one set ahead of your goals. GOOD LUCK!!

Good for you - you know you need to do something different! You've made a terrific start. Your self esteem will soar when you lose some weight. Don't try a crash diet - just use portion control and when you're full stop eating. Salad is your friend! Look for friends at church. School friends are too fickle. And remember a lot of what you're going through is just your age. As you get older things will get much better. I promise. Hang in there - I'm on your side!

Looking into seeing a counselor would be a suggestion. That way you can build a relationship and get to the root of the problem. Most important you will have someone to help you and guide you through the difficult times. I know, I am there with you . Just not the homework part. Kudos for you made the First Step in realizing what you need to do.

Please understand first and foremost, this is my opinion. You sound as though you're depressed, understandable. One important thing you need to do is clean your room. That sounds very petty, however if you live in a literal mess, you will live in a figurative mess as well. Change is a gradual thing. You can't expect to wake up one morning and decide to be a different person. If you feel as though you need to take baby steps in changing take them, but don't go too slow. If you don't reach a goal for yourself by a certain point, this could cause further depression, so I urge you to take your time. I hope this helps. If you need to email me, please do so. You never lost control of your life. One side of me says: You just need to get your priorities straight. If you are young, it's ok you probably don't know them yet. And through life you will learn them. Nevermind friends. Don't mind that now, at the end of the day or better yet at the end of your life, that is when you will realize who was your friend and who was not your friend. Keep a mental note of the 'Beautiful stranger' in your life: a complete stranger(s) who did something for you on the spot or that helped in that moment and changed you for the better. Be a good person, random acts of kindness to strangers.. walk away and don't expect anything in return. Concentrate on good health, rather than being thin or overweight. ______________________________________… The other side of me says: Seek extra help in school and try different study patterns from the ones you've been using. Talk to counsellors or teachers. Get a tutor if you can! Focus on your studies. Friends can actually cause you to skip classes or fail or do badly anyways. Love yourself and focus on the things you love in life. Concentrate on good health. Stay active and physical. Eat healthy. Body, mind and soul. Recognize that life is too short to procrastinate. Realize that you are important to this world and you need to do study well and live strong. Join extra curricular clubs, groups or sports teams. A great place to enjoy things with company.

Chic - Not sure how you use a study timetable, but in my field we make up something called a heirarchy. You have listed several things you would like to improve. Each one of those things must be broken down into manageable attainable parts, or goals. Things are not going to get better by your next English class. You have to set your mind to a slow process of improvement, taking very small steps towards your ultimate goal. Another way to do this is to say, where do I want to be in 10 years...where do I see myself on this road in five...what can I be doing NOW to begin heading toward my life plan. Sometimes we have to hit an "all time low" before we can find the determination to bounce back into life. Then, as we accomplish those goals we begin to have a better view of ourselves, our self-esteem improves until suddenly we find that we are just pretty great Good luck, I am proud of you for taking changing your life into your hands and taking responsibility for doing it.

Hang in there! I am the same way sometimes. It helps me to set attainable goals, that can be reached every day. Make a list if that helps. Then, you can see in black and white what you need/want to do and what you have gotten done. Then, when you have cleaned your room and studied a little you will start feeling better about yourself. And, then start reaching for bigger goals. Try not to be too hard on yourself but set boundries for yourself so you are less likely to fall into a slump again. Good luck!
