Would it be unusual to double-major in Psychology & Sociology?

Sociology OR Psychology?

  • Readers, First of all i would like to thank you for helping me out. I am a student who has just finished his GCSE's and would like to continue education to study A-Levels. Subjects i will be taking are Business Studies, ICT, Accounts and Psychology/Sociology. This is where you come in. Which subject is more enjoyable Psychology OR Sociology? I understand that Psychology is study of behaviour and Sociology is about society but i dont know which to pick Help me please.

  • Answer:

i was in the situation, kinda :) i'm in the process of trying to decide which subject(s) to do for my degree at the end of next year. one of the courses were psychology and sociology as a joint. confused i went to my psychology teacher (i've been doing psychology for my A levels) and she told me that they are two different things, like sociology focuses on communities and groups, whereas psychology focuses on the individual. i absolutely love psychology, i'm doing it uni (well social psychology/ or if i dnt get into that one psychology/ human geography joint honours). my school did a 'freshers week' for people going into sixth form to sample as many lessons/subjects as they want, maybe yours will too/ or start talking to teachers. good luck xx

I didn't take either so my opinion is worth what you paid for it. As for me I'd go with Psychology I just think it would be more interesting and personal. However Sociology would be more like taking a broader look. I seem to think one without the other misses the mark. I guess you can look at it like looking at an ant colony. Are you interested in knwoing what is going on in their minds or how they work as a group?

For me, it's Sociology. Because it deals with the society, which it has a wide variety. You study the culture of different people, their behavior etc. Plus, it's somewhat universal.

Great question that deserves an answer. Both areas are very interesting and address different areas of the social sciences. Which is better or more interesting can be determined only by you. My suggestion would be to find an introductory level textbook for each and spend some time thumbing through each. That will give you an idea of the subject matter.

As a single class, it depends if you want to boost your GPA or if you want to do something that might be useful to you in the future. If you plan to do any sort of social work or research, I say go with Sociology. Otherwise, pick that which is better for your grades. Honestly, Psychology, at least as a major, is completely worthless, but you might like it.

Stop thinking of what you wish to learn and concentrate on what you want to do. Do you want to help poor people become more poor and place children with no parents into different homes year after year giving them no chance of permanence; or do you want to speak and counsel patients that have issues with family problems, sex problems, mental problems, etc. With a bachelors in each you can do very little to actually help in the broader spectrum, but can do a lot to feel satisfied personally. With a masters you can lead in sociology or counsel in psychology. Only you can make the decision!

I would say Psychology is more enjoyable ... however you might not feel the same way if you picked it... It depends on what you are more interested in...

They're both rubbish, people think they're interesting, but by christmas you'd wished you had chosen something more worthwhile. I doubt very much you'll continue them to A2. If you want my opinion, don't choose either.

Psychology = very interesting and challenging than sociology, worth more to uni's Sociology = easy A grade, very dull i head

Both enjoyable but: Sociology = social worker or probation officer. $20,000/year to a max of around $40,000/year. Unless you go to law school another $20,000/year for 3 years then you'll make $60,000/year your first year if you work for a law firm or $30,000 if you work for yourself to a max of millions if you have your own law firm, but normally around $200,000-$300,000/year. Psychology = your own practice after you graduate. $100/hour = $800/day = $4,000/week = $200,000/year and that is the max unless you publish some cool bestseller book. But you'll be making that over a longer period of time than a lawyer. I'd go psychology. It's all about the money.
