What are some good/original sociology research paper topics?

What is a good sociology research paper topic? Whats the difference as well?

  • I need a good sociology topic for a short research paper in my intro to sociology class. Any ideas? I want to come up with my own, some of the examples my professor gave me include capital punishment, organ harvesting, planned obsolescence, war on drugs, cults, euthanasia, etc. If possible, provide some detail as to how I could go about some topics. My professor supplied some leading questions like for health care: Why does health care in this country cost as much as it does? How do other rich nations manage there HC? Does competition really exist, and should it, in the field of HC? Also, I am a psychology major and is there any real difference to approaching a sociology paper than there would be in approaching a psychology paper??? THANKS!!

  • Answer:

How about the topic of peak oil and the need for society to power down to much lower per capita energy use. The social change that this will entail will be major, may well turn very ugly. It is the major reason our economy is in long term decline. Likely this will be the biggest underlying cause of social stress over the next 20 to 30 years. Sociology is more about group behavior and how this effects the individual. Psychology is more a isolated focus on the just the individual.

I personally find child soldier's very appealing to read about. It's original and not many students actually seem to specify in that area and are usually uneducated about the whole thing. (In my school anyway) You could also write about the importance or lack there of religion in contemporary society. Asking questions about the development of secularization, decline of stigma, how important in religion to young people? Showing facts and figures that suggest the decline of influence religion has over young people's lives. For example, there's a rise in cohabitation and changing attitudes about premarital sex or couples cohabiting but never actually marrying. Something as such is becoming the norm and the decline in influence of religion has been a major contributor to this and how religion has had to adapt to changing attitudes in society in order to maintain a mass follower group. It's just an example but I do think child soldier's would be a very appealing subject if you informed yourself enough on it.
