What is the difference between working class, middle class and upper class?

• I never understood what makes a person of a particular class. What are the differences? I've been told that my uncle is middle class, and that my parents are working class. My uncle works in London, as the head of a fashion design company. He's almost a millionaire. My parents are both head teachers in Manchester, on a salary of £58000 a year. My best friend is also apparently middle class, because she went to a private school and lives in a big house. Is that middle class? How are the two different? What defines upper class, middle class and working class?

Working class (lower class, labouring class) includes those employed in lower tier jobs as measured by skill, education and lower incomes, which also extends to those in unemployment or otherwise having below-average income, usually those in physical or manual labor, and who rent. The cutoff between working class and middle class is where people spend money primarily as a lifestyle rather than for sustenance, for example, middle class are spending on fashion and new vehicles rather than merely on nutrition and shelter. Most people are middle class in western society. Middle class generally own (or are buying) their homes, or own land, work in management and have some form of higher education. The middle class can be further divided into lower, middle and upper-middle class. Upper class are the wealthiest and wield the greatest political power, generally the top 1-2% of the population. They generally do not depend on wages or salary or any employment; but have enormous amounts of money in investment, money management, nobility, heirs to fortune, venture capitalists, stockbrokers, CEOs, entrepreneurs, etc. These are guidelines, there are no hard and fast rules.
