What kind of careers do sociologists take ?

Most of the Sociology majors I knew went into teaching. A few others ended up working for the state in some capacity, sometimes dealing with children's issues (Human Services, etc). One eventually went into the criminal justice field. Generally, the buzz in college was that it's not a field that pays very much, and it's overcrowded, but that was ages ago. I don't know if it's true now.

I'm in my third year of a sociology degree and I still don't know what it does (if anything!). In our first lecture we were told that we probably wouldn't get a job out of it, but when we're all on the dole at least we will know all the social factors which led us to be there. That's what you want to hear on your first day of uni!! I wan't to be a sociologist of religion. I asked a sociologist of religion if there is any work in that... he didn't really answer.. only said I should do honours..
